OK... so this song is the "one". It's the reason that this project exists. You see, it was October Sky that first really got me back in the studio and recording.

This song was originally written while I was trying to make sense of my mother's illness and I knew when it was done that I really had to record it and give it life. It was then that the idea of "The Thing With Feathers" began to take form.

"The Thing With Feathers" was a PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) fundraising and public awareness compilation project that featured some totally amazing artists. In fact, I will still often put those discs in the CD player and marvel at the talent that came together to make that project a reality.

Anyway... when putting that project together I really felt like October Sky "belonged" on it almost as a PSP "theme song" for lack of a better word. You see, October is officially "PSP Month" and there really isn't a better time of year to accurately reflect this illness. It is a time where everything is dying and winter is on it's way... and yet there is still so much color and life...

Anyway... I went in to the studio to record this tune and found that it was really such a therapeutic experience for me that I just couldn't stop. So I just kept going back, writing more and recording more... until I just knew... "It was finished".

So ya... October Sky is a special one to me.

NOTE: This tune was totally made by the addition of an amazing Cellist from London by the name of Christine Newland.  She really just "got" this tune from the start and took it places. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed working with her on this project. Thanks Christine!

OCTOBER SKY

Words & Music by Michael Bannerman

I heard a voice

The voice of winter

She spoke to me and said you better get ready 'cause I'm on my way

Ya, I'm on my way

I tried to fight it

I tried to reason

If I was strong enough, I'd hold back the season and nothing would change

Nothing would change

THE NIGHTS ARE GETTING COLDER

THE COLOURS FADE TO GREY

THE DAYS ARE GROWING SHORTER

AND TEARS ARE ON THEIR WAY

I saw your face

The face of autumn

You smiled at me and the splendor of your beauty made everything all right

Ya, everything all right

And in that moment,

There was no sickness

No sad farewell

No painful good-bye

No good-bye

(Chorus)

Why?

Why does it have to be so cold?

And Where?

Where did the summer go?

Do you know?

Do you know?

Do you know?

Do you know?

I heard a voice

The voice of winter

She spoke to me and said you'd better get ready 'cause I'm on my way

Ya, I'm on my way
