When I was in high-school I use to write all these silly little piano tunes (similar to this one) for composition class. If I remember right most of them were really just some sort of variation of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".  Anyway...  adding this tune was again all about creating a "book end" for the project. The Long Goodbye is really about pulling everything back to that "empty" and "soulful" sound that we started off with... eventually fading down to nothing more than the needle on the record player.

Don't get me wrong... I love the whole digitally clean age, but the one thing I miss was the finality of that sound of a needle on the record player just going around and around... announcing quietly that the project was finished. It's a very soothing sound and seemed again, a somewhat fitting way to close things off with.
